Take your education into the world

SIT makes studying abroad extraordinary—your way.
With SIT, your study abroad experience is an extension of your education. You will deepen your understanding of, and work to tackle, some of our world’s most pressing issues—from climate change and geopolitics to global health, human rights, and sustainability.
SIT’s programs provide opportunities for comparative studies, independent research, fieldwork, and internships that align with a range of majors. Alongside our expert faculty, who live and work in the communities where you will be staying, you will gain real-world experience and connections.

SIT student stories in action

Turning global experience into a career opportunity
Benjamin Heilbronn | Harvard
Environmental Science & Public Policy
Benjamin studied climate change in San Francisco, Ecuador, Morocco, and Nepal, with SIT’s IHP Climate Change program, learning firsthand about land, energy, water, and environmental justice from government officials, farmers, professors, activists, Indigenous leaders, and industry experts.
He also conducted comparative research on public transportation systems in Quito, Rabat, and Kathmandu before moving on to a sustainability strategy internship at PwC.

Putting environmental studies into practice
Sophia Reyes | CU Boulder Honors Student
Environmental Studies
While studying rainforest, reef, and cultural ecology in Australia, Sophia developed skills in research, data analysis, science communication, and technology—including helping annotate 18,000 sound signals used to train machine-learning tools.
“This semester tested my adaptability, sharpened my research and data analysis skills, and completely expanded my worldview.”

Examining climate impacts on the Great Barrier Reef
Ansley Levine
William & Mary Monroe Scholar
At Australia’s Lizard Island Research Station, Ansley researched how water temperature and habitat quality affect barred rabbitfish behavior—examining questions around climate impacts, coral reef health, and ecosystem resilience.
Why SIT?
Study in the field or community: SIT’s approach is grounded in hands-on learning that deeply builds your analytical and problem-solving skills. Choose research or an internship in your field and ensure your study abroad experience is distinctly different.
Learn in small cohorts from local experts: SIT’s smaller groups provide greater access to the faculty and professionals shaping the work you care about. Meet local researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and activists, and start building your global network.
Explore across countries and continents: SIT’s comparative study programs take you across multiple countries—or continents—in one semester. Study an issue of your choice from multiple cultural, political, and geographic contexts to gain a broader global perspective that sets you apart.
Earn an academic minor: Several SIT programs offer a minor option with no extra cost or coursework. Whether it’s in Arctic studies in Iceland or global sustainability in Portugal, this standout credential gives you an edge when applying for jobs or graduate school.
