Overview

Why intern abroad in the Netherlands?

Engage with the city of Amsterdam as a working, academic professional in this immersive, six-week internship program. Explore the intersections of identity, power, and community through hands-on engagement and critical reflection. You’ll be placed at one of SIT Amsterdam’s partner organizations, where you’ll work with them towards their strategic goals, while practically examining how dimensions of identity shape individual and collective experiences and action. The program centers professional and personal growth, tailoring each internship experience to the student’s interest area.

Highlights

  • Expand your professional network through cultivating relationships with professionals, experts, and potential employers.
  • Develop professional skills and identify professional goals geared towards personal growth through the internship experience and interaction with professionals in the field.
  • Learn from experts at NGOs, cultural institutions, community-led platforms and initiatives and archives.
  • Analyze real-world challenges throughout the internship experience, translate theory to practice during dialogue sessions, seminar sessions and guided academic reflection at (I)NGOs and community organizations.

Internship Practice & Seminar

Internship Practice & Seminar – syllabus
(ITRN3006 / 6 credits)

This course and seminar is based on a framework of four pillars: internship placement and practice; site visits and briefings to international institutions, companies, NGOs, and start-up organizations; thematic lectures on social impact in global contexts; and discussion/reflection sessions on internship experience to enhance professional and personal growth. Upon their arrival in the Netherlands, and following the orientation session in the first week of the program, students will visit partner institutions and meet internship mentors in the second week of the program. After briefings with internship institutions and interviews with internship mentors and the SIT Academic Director, students will identify the institution of their choice that has an opening and that may host them.

Students can undertake their internship in areas of social impact such as civil society initiatives, social entrepreneurship, innovation hubs, and think tanks leading to achievement of the UN SDGs-2030.

Previous internships have involved:

  • Providing support work at Fite Qlub, a multidisciplinary platform operating from a queer, intersectional and decolonial perspective
  • Creating content and providing social media support for TRANS Magazine (physical and digital), a publication by and about trans people
  • Helping out at one of Amsterdam’s feminist and queer festivals
  • Coordinating events at We Are Queer, a gym and coaching platform especially for people who identify as LGBTQIA+
