Hospitality is an important part of the nomadic heritage of Jordan, evident from the Kingdom’s providing shelter to those who have fled conflict in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and as far away as Bosnia. By interning in Jordan at an organization that works on primary health care, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response, emergency response through mobile clinics and outreach programs, rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities, child protection, community building, education, skills, and livelihood, and women empowerment, you will assist local and international relief efforts supporting hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees. You’ll learn about the objectives, priorities, standards, and procedures of humanitarian health response during emergency and post-emergency phases of refugee crises.
The internship will help you understand the priorities of a refugees, and you’ll learn about conflict-related traumas and psychosocial challenges of assimilation. During your internship, you will be introduced to the guidelines for counseling, mental health, and psychological support in emergencies.

You will spend an overnight excursion in North Jordan, Ajloun and Jarash, where you will explore Jordan’s natural beauty and ancient heritage. In Ajloun, you will visit the majestic Ajloun Castle and enjoy the lush green landscapes. In Jerash, one of the best preserved ancient Roman cities compared to size, you will wander through remarkably preserved Roman ruins.
You will visit the Baptism Site at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, a place rich with spiritual and historical significance. Standing where traditions say Jesus was baptized offer a profound moment of reflection. Afterward, you will experience the unique serenity of the Dead Sea, floating effortlessly in its mineral-rich waters.
You will visit the breathtaking city of Petra, where you will walk through the Siq to behold the majestic Treasury carved into rose-red rock. In Wadi Rum, you will explore the vast desert by jeep, surrounded by towering sandstone mountains and endless silence. You will visit Aqaba, relax by the Red Sea, and enjoy its vibrant coral reefs and warm coastal atmosphere.

Internship and Seminar – syllabus
(ITRN3000 / 4 credits)
This seminar consists of a 5-week internship with a local community organization, health institution, or international NGO. The internship enables students to gain valuable internship experience and enhance their skills in a professional, international environment. SIT internships are hands-on and reflective. In addition to completing the internship, students will submit a paper processing their learning experience on the job and analyzing an issue important to the organization they interned with, and/or they will design a socially responsible solution to a problem identified by the organization.

Contextual Studies in Counseling and Humanitarian Action – syllabus
(MDES3000 / 3 credits)
This seminar is focused on the study of humanitarian aid and counseling in Jordan. Over decades, Jordan has become home to millions of refugees and displaced populations from Palestine, Iraq, Syria, and other countries. The seminar provides first-hand exposure to the humanitarian response of various aid organizations, during the emergency, post-emergency, and resettlement phases, in collaboration with the host government. The seminar addresses the common principles, rights, and duties governing humanitarian action as set out in the humanitarian charter, as well as the priority humanitarian interventions and minimum standards across the various sectors of humanitarian work, with special emphasis on the health sector.
