Overview

Why study abroad in Australia?

Australia has stunning and diverse natural environments, from flourishing rainforests to vast deserts and mountain ranges, full of unique plants and wildlife. Like many other parts of the world, all of this is at risk from changing climates and the destruction of ecosystems, requiring increased environmental action at the personal, social, and political levels.

From your base close to the beach in the vibrant coastal town of Byron Bay, you will explore Australia’s approaches to sustainable farming and food initiatives, energy, and waste management. You will participate in ecopsychology, social change, and sustainable fashion workshops, as well as learn about Indigenous perspectives on land, community, and sustainability. There will also be a range of field trips, including excursions to prominent permaculture sites, areas of ecological significance, and the culturally rich city of Melbourne.

Throughout the program, you will learn from leading academics and sustainability practitioners, learn about successful environmental campaigns, and develop skills in climate leadership and the tools to apply sustainability efforts at home. The ‘hands on’ practicum element will enable you to apply the skills and knowledge gained throughout the course, aligning to an area of interest in sustainable fashion, permaculture design, creative arts, or other critical themes in sustainability practice.

Highlights

  • Live close to the beach in the vibrant coastal town of Byron Bay.
  • Develop hands-on skills in permaculture design and sustainable fashion.
  • Experience the culturally rich city of Melbourne.
  • Gain valuable skills in key areas of sustainability leadership.

Prerequisites

None.

Excursions

Seven Mile Beach

The program gets underway at Linnaeus Estate, a sustainable 280-acre property with a pristine beachfront on Seven Mile Beach. Here you will camp near the beach and have two days of orientation to help you settle in and learn about your upcoming adventures.

Permaculture Sites

On day trips around Byron Bay and Melbourne, you will visit prominent permaculture properties and demonstration sites that have been designed based on best practice sustainability principles. There will be hands-on activities guided by leading permaculture practitioners and educators. You will also visit the Byron farmers market and experience the vibrant sustainability communities dedicated to food localization and building resilience.

Melbourne

With more than half of the world’s population living in urban areas, cities are a vital element in the study of sustainability, environmental politics, and climate leadership. On the field trip to Melbourne, one of the world’s great cities, you will attend stimulating lectures and go on excursions to see examples of sustainability initiatives in urban and semi-urban settings.

Environmental Psychology Workshop

In this one-day workshop, you will be introduced to a range of philosophical perspectives on the natural environment, from economic rationalism to deep ecology and ecofeminism, as well as explore ways to remain resilient in the face of serious environmental crises. You will develop an understanding of your own and others’ environmental philosophies.

Indigenous Knowledge and Perspectives

Explore how land is central to the identity of Indigenous peoples in workshops and excursions led by local Aboriginal elders. Examine different ways Indigenous peoples view and relate to their environments and deconstruct dominant western worldviews as you develop an understanding of radically different perspectives. You will critically analyze your own relationship with the environment and reflect on what contemporary western societies can learn from Indigenous cultures that might help in efforts to become more sustainable.

Sustainable Fashion Practicum

Through a series of hands-on workshops and exercises you will gain a range of practical skills like mending, hand stitching, upcycling, natural dyeing and sustainable garment making, to help address environmental issues caused by fast fashion. Those who choose this practicum will also design and create their own garment or accessory using central slow fashion principles.

Social Change and Environmental Action Workshop

In this workshop, you’ll examine models of social change, and the types and scales of changes needed to solve our major environmental problems. You’ll look at examples of successful environmental campaigns and be introduced to a wide range of environmental issues. You’ll gain practical tools for effective environmental action at different levels: personal, community, and structural/political. As you identify skills you already possess, you’ll explore ideas for projects you can undertake when you return home.

Please note that SIT will make every effort to maintain its programs as described. To respond to emergent situations, however, SIT may have to change or cancel programs.

Sustainability and Environmental Action Seminar

Sustainability and Environmental Action Seminar – syllabus
ENVI-3000 / 3 credits

This course offers an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability and environmental issues, taking a global perspective while drawing on local and Indigenous knowledges. The goal of the course is to give students the analytical and practical tools needed to advance sustainability transitions through strategic action at various levels of intervention – personal, social, economic, and political. Students will be exposed to a range of ecological philosophies, practices, and social movements, and will be invited to reflect critically on them as they develop their own understanding of sustainability during the semester. Through lectures, workshops, field trips, student-led activities, and excursions to various Australian cities and regions, the course offers an experiential education in contemporary environmental issues, with a focus on practical, solution-orientated action.

Sustainability and Environmental Action Project

Sustainability and Environmental Action Project – syllabus
ENVI-3060 / 3 credits

This program is a project-based course designed for students to develop research and advocacy skills in relation to the theory and practice of sustainability, with a focus on environmental action and leadership. It operates in parallel to Sustainability and Environmental Action Seminar to provide an opportunity for students to engage more deeply with an ecological topic or theme of special interest. Through lectures, field trips, and practical and collaborative workshop experiences, students will be exposed to sustainability experts and industry practitioners while at the same time developing practical skills for real world application. This program infuses theory and practice to provide a basis for students to develop their own project under the supervision of an expert advisor. Students can choose from four project streams to focus on:

  1. Sustainable Fashion Practicum focuses on exploring alternative practices of eco-clothing and sustainable fashion and materials.
  2. Permaculture Design Practicum is based on the design philosophy of permaculture and exploring real-world applications.
  3. Creative Arts Practicum gives students the opportunity to develop their pre-existing artistic or creative skills in the context of sustainability and environmental issues.
  4. Research Project provides an opportunity to conduct a more extended and critical literature review instead of a practicum.
