  • Build your résumé through a five-week internship.

    Get experience in psychology, public health, health policy, humanitarian action, human development, women empowerment, or social work. SIT will use its extensive networks to facilitate the placement process with a community organization, health institution, or international NGO. You’ll gain practical, professional experience in a work environment and enhance your skillset and knowledge in an international setting under both academic and professional guidance and supervision. You’ll also learn how to use your internship experience for future professional growth.

  • Witness the humanitarian responses of UN and other international agencies to Jordan’s refugee crises.

    Examine the work, policies, and strategies of refugee-specialized UN agencies, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World Health Organization (WHO), and the UN’s International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Learn the priorities of intervention in a refugee relief program through the frameworks of water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion; food security, nutrition, and food aid; shelter, settlement, and non-food items; and health services.

  • Learn the common principles, rights, and duties governing humanitarian action as set out in the humanitarian charter.

    Learn about the core “process and people” standards that cut across all major sectors of humanitarian aid such as participation, initial assessment, response, targeting, monitoring and evaluation, aid worker competencies and responsibilities, supervision, management, and support of personnel. You’ll also examine priority humanitarian interventions and minimum standards across various sectors of humanitarian work, with special emphasis on the health sector.

  • Understand risk factors and prevalence of mental illness in refugees.

    Learn about conflict-related traumas and psychosocial challenges of immigration and assimilation. You will also be introduced to the guidelines for counseling, mental health, and psychological support in emergencies.

  • Learn and intern in a supportive environment.

    In the first two weeks of the program, you will be prepared for the internship through an introduction to the broader social, cultural, and political context of Jordan as well as key issues in counseling and humanitarian action in the country. You’ll also discuss the ethics of the internship and workplace norms in Jordan.

    Throughout the internship, you’ll have regular weekly reflection and assessment meetings with the academic director or internship coordinator to review the progress of the internship. You’ll share your personal experiences in the internship and reflect on the professional learning process. You’ll also be expected to keep a work journal in which you document your everyday internship experience, challenges you face, and how you deal with those challenges and reflect on your professional achievements.

  • Devise a socially responsible response to an issue you have observed during your internship.

    You’ll design a sustainable plan, training manual, grant proposal, or research project that responds to the needs of your organization and links back to the program theme.

Internship and Seminar – syllabus
(ITRN3000 / 4 credits / 120 hours)
This seminar consists of a 5-week internship with a local community organization, health institution, or international NGO. The internship enables students to gain valuable internship experience and enhance their skills in a professional, international environment.
Contextual Studies in Counseling and Humanitarian Action – syllabus
(MDES3000 / 3 credits / 45 hours)
Students gain practical professional experience in a work environment and enhance their skillset and knowledge in an international setting under both academic and professional guidance and supervision. Students submit a final report in which they process their learning experience on the job and design a socially responsible solution proposal for an issue they have observed and analyzed during their Internship. The report should also document a comprehensive schedule and the specific skills and knowledge acquired through the experience. The ultimate aim of the internship is to enable the student to gain valuable work experience within the work environment of an area of their interest. The program concludes with a final presentation in English that ties internship experience with critical global issue themes and core learning objectives.

Bayan Abdulhaq, PhD, Academic Director

BayanBayan holds a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences and an MSc in pharmaceutical analysis and quality control from King’s College, London. She holds a BSc in pharmacy from the University of Jordan, where she has taught drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and analysis. She has extensive experience in educational quality assurance and was quality assurance director at TAG Graduate School of Business, part of the German Jordanian University. She served as board member and executive director of the Arab Organization for Quality Assurance in Education and as consultant for higher education institutions in Bahrain. She is a certified manager for organizational excellence by the American Society for Quality.

Bayan has more than eight years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry; she has been a production manager and medical affairs manager. She also consults on Good Clinical Practice. She is a licensed pharmacist, a member of the Pharmaceutical Union of Jordan, and a member of the Bioequivalence Committee at the Jordanian Food and Drug Administration.

Dana Mustafa, Program Assistant

Dana obtained her BA in law from the University of Jordan in 2014. Since graduation, she has worked as a project officer at Zad Charity Foundation and volunteered at various local and international NGOs. Her role included coordinating internal resources and third parties/vendors for education and humanitarian projects. Dana works as a coach at legal clinics at the University of Jordan’s awareness lectures on human trafficking and women’s rights. Dana participated in Oxford University’s Price Media Law Competition and was awarded best finalist as a team member.

Ashqaq Azem, MS, Language Coordinator

Ashwaq holds a master’s degree in educational sciences: methods of teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speakers from the University of Jordan. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Arabic language and its literature from the same university. Ashwaq has more than 19 years’ experience teaching Arabic and developing subject-matter language materials and skills-based syllabi for non-Arabic language speakers. She worked as Arabic language and culture lecturer in Qasid, the European Academy for Languages and Training and Instituto Cervantes. Ashwaq also worked as the Arabic language editor and proofreader for UNICEF Jordan.




The homestay is an integral part of the SIT experience. During your homestay, you’ll become a member of a local family, sharing meals with them, joining them for special occasions, talking with them in their language, and experiencing the host country through their eyes. Homestay placements are arranged by a local coordinator who carefully screens and approves each family. Students frequently cite the homestay as the highlight of their program. AmmanStudents will be housed with homestay families in Amman. If the internship is located outside of Amman, housing during the formal internship period will be arranged. The homestay is an integral part of the SIT experience. During your homestay, you’ll become a member of a local family, sharing meals with them, joining them for special occasions, talking with them in their language, and experiencing the host country through their eyes. Homestay placements are arranged by a local coordinator who carefully screens and approves each family. Students frequently cite the homestay as the highlight of their program. 




You’ll spend three days exploring the south of Jordan. Here, you’ll visit NGOs providing free services to vulnerable locals and refugees. You’ll also enjoy the splendors of Petra, Wadi Rum (Valley of the Moon), and the Red Sea port of Aqaba.




SIT internships are hands-on and reflective. In addition to completing the internship, you will submit a paper processing your learning experience on the job and analyzing an issue important to the organization you worked with, and/or you will design a socially responsible solution to a problem identified by the organization.

Sample internships include:

  • Providing relief to Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanians with the International Rescue Committee
  • Working with farmers, women, and refugees living in poverty with Care International
  • Assisting epidemiologists with the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network
  • Promoting health awareness with the Jordan Health Aid Society
  • Supporting the efforts of Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development-Legal Aid to raise legal awareness among vulnerable populations, fight injustice, and promote equality
  • Assisting the International Committee of the Red Cross’s humanitarian responses to Syrian refugees and Jordanian host communities
  • Monitoring and evaluating healthcare services provided to refugees by Jordan Health Aid Association
  • Designing and implementing art therapy and women’s empowerment projects at River Jordan Foundation’s Queen Rania Family and Child Center
  • Writing proposals for funding for vulnerable communities’ economic empowerment projects at Durrat Al Manal

Cost and Scholarships


Cost and Scholarships

SIT Study Abroad is committed to making international education accessible to all students. Scholarship awards generally range from $500 to $5,000 for semester programs and $500 to $3,000 for summer programs. This year, SIT will award more than $1.5 million in scholarships and grants to SIT Study Abroad students. 

SIT Pell Grant Match Award. SIT Study Abroad provides matching grants to students receiving Federal Pell Grant funding for the term during which they are studying with SIT. This award can be applied to any SIT program. Qualified students must complete the scholarship portion of their application. View all SIT Study Abroad scholarships.

This program is eligible for a New Horizons Grant, a scholarship for our new programs. Award amounts are $2,500 for semester and $1,500 for summer programs. Students demonstrating need through their submitted scholarship application will be eligible. 

Tuition: $5,167

The tuition fee covers the following program components:

  • Cost of all lecturers
  • Preparation for the internship
  • All educational excursions, including all related travel costs
  • Internship (including a stipend for accommodation and food)
  • Health insurance throughout the entire program period 

Room & Board: $2,315

The room and board fee covers the following program components:

  • All accommodations during the entire program period. This includes orientation, time in the program base, on all excursions, during the internship, and during the final evaluation period. Accommodation is covered either by SIT Study Abroad directly, through a stipend provided to each student, or through the homestay.

  • All meals for the entire program period. Meals are covered either by SIT Study Abroad directly, through a stipend to the student, or through the homestay.

Airline pricing can vary greatly due to the volatility of airline industry pricing, flight availability, and specific flexibility/restrictions on the type of ticket purchased. Students may choose to take advantage of frequent flyer or other airline awards available to them, which could significantly lower their travel costs.

International Phone: Each student must bring a smart phone that is able to accept a local SIM card with them to their program, or they must purchase a smart phone locally.

Discretionary Expenses

Personal expenses during the program vary based on individual spending habits and budgets. While all meals and accommodations are covered in the room and board fee, incidentals and personal transportation costs differ depending on the non-program-related interests and pursuits of each student.
