Overview

Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with more than 400 million native speakers and dozens of dialects. Learn both Modern Standard and Jordanian colloquial Arabic during an intensive language J-term immersion program in Jordan. Learn Arabic in an Arabic-only environment with classroom instruction. Through a combination of field exercises and homestays during the J-term, you will rapidly learn to speak and understand Arabic while experiencing Arab and Jordanian culture.

You’ll enjoy a three-day excursion to see diverse communities and historic places, including Jesus’ baptism Site, the Dead Sea, Wadi Rum, and Petra. Educational excursions outside of Amman reveal Jordan’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty while providing additional opportunities for you to practice your language skills.

SIT is also offering a supplementary online Arabic Language course during the fall semester.

The three-week J-Term program will start with two days of orientation including culture, safety and security, a drop-off activity, and an Amman city exploration tour.  Students who were not enrolled in the online term of this program will have a written and oral language placement test during the orientation. The content of the term will be delivered through in-class lessons, field assignments, homestay activities, and excursions.

You’ll strengthen your Arabic language studies while living with a homestay family in Amman and immersing yourself in local culture. You’ll put your language skills to use in field-based settings and go on a three-day excursion to Jesus’ baptism site, the Dead Sea, Petra, and Wadi Rum. You will complete your midterm and final exams and final project presentation during the in-country program.

Please note that SIT will make every effort to maintain its programs as described. To respond to emergent situations, however, SIT may have to change or cancel programs.
