Overview

Spend three weeks in Bali immersing yourself in Indonesian daily life to quickly build your language skills for social and professional use and develop an understanding of Indonesian culture. There will be an emphasis is on speaking and comprehension skills, as well as reading and writing, through online classroom teaching, and you will have both midterm and final exams. Based on an evaluation, including oral proficiency testing, you will be placed in beginning, intermediate, or advanced classes.  

The program has an excellent teacher-to-student ratio and the native language instructors are experienced in teaching Indonesian language to foreign students. You will rapidly improve your language skills through oral proficiency-based methods and a variety of interactive communication-based language teaching techniques, which form the core of this course.  

You will be required to participate in an Indonesian language pledge and use the language both inside and out of class. You will also be introduced to Indonesian students, homestay families, and friends so you can practice Bahasa Indonesia with native speakers and apply what you learn in the classroom to the informal conditions of everyday life. 

SIT is also offering a supplementary online Bahasa Indonesia Language course during the fall semester.

Program Sites

Kerambitan, Indonesia

SIT’s program center is located in an ancient palace in village of KerambitanTabanan, on BaliKerambitan is close to attractions including the black-sand beach and the scenic temple on the rock, Tanah Lot temple, where you will have opportunities to pray and enjoy the sunset. Kerambitan is also well-known for its unique distinctive art form typical of Tabanan styles.  

During the three-week period, you will undertake 45 hours of Indonesian language instruction. Individualized tutoring and training will be provided to each student two or three times a week. Through a combination of interactive classroom learning, cultural immersion with local homestay families and students, and the practical application of language skills in Balinese society during day trips and throughout the entire program period, you can make tremendous progress in your Indonesian language skills during your time in Bali. To enhance the immersive quality of the experience, this course includes a language pledge to speak Indonesian throughout each day in Bali.

Beginning Bahasa Indonesia

Beginning Bahasa Indonesia – syllabus
(INDO 1503 J-Term Course / 3 Credits)

This course is designed to develop student proficiency and communication in Indonesian language. While emphasis is placed primarily upon oral comprehension and conversational skills (i.e., listening and speaking), reading and writing are highlighted as crucial to the reinforcement of those skills. Thus, the course is designed not only to help students acquire Indonesian, but also to grasp cultural practices in Indonesia. Cultural context is built into the course and introduced through experiential activities accompanying the textbook. Beginning Indonesian introduces students to pronunciation and writing systems of basic grammar, basic vocabulary and sentence structure. Emphasis is placed on the functional use of the language to enable students to participate in basic conversational exchanges, understand native speakers of Indonesian accustomed to dealing with non-native Indonesian speakers, complete written compositions describing daily events or personal experiences, and to read basic texts on familiar topics such as weather, seasons, food, family, studies and friends.

Students also sign a Bahasa Indonesia language pledge for the duration of the program.

Intermediate Bahasa Indonesia

Intermediate Bahasa Indonesia – syllabus
(INDO 2003 – 2503 J-Term Course / 3 Credits)

This intermediate level language course is designed to further develop students’ basic level proficiency and communication in Indonesian. Primary emphasis is placed on developing listening and speaking skills. However, integrating reading and writing skills is highlighted to reinforce students’ oral comprehension and conversation. The Intermediate Bahasa Indonesia course begins immediately after students’ arrival in Indonesia, and throughout the course students are encouraged to apply their language skills in all facets of the program, especially during the urban homestays, both in Kerambitan and in rural homestays, countryside. This is a component of the course program that requires commitment from the learner. The more enthusiastic language learner you are,the easier and better your learning outcomes and the more successful your integration into the host community.

Students also sign a Bahasa Indonesia language pledge for the duration of the program.

Advanced Bahasa Indonesia

Advanced Bahasa Indonesia – syllabus
(INDO 3003 – 3503 J-Term Course / 3 Credits)

This advanced level language course is designed to further expand and strengthen students’ proficiency and communication in Indonesian. This course utilizes an integrated skills approach in teaching, though primary emphasis is placed on developing listening and speaking skills. However, reading and writing skills are highlighted to reinforce students’ oral comprehension and conversation.The Advanced Bahasa Indonesia course begins immediately after students’ arrival in Indonesia,and throughout the course students are encouraged to apply their language skills in all facets of the program, especially during the urban homestays both in Kerambitan and rural homestays during the village excursion, countryside excursion. This is a component of the program that requires commitment from the learner. The more enthusiastic language learner you are,the easier and better your learning outcomes and the more successful your integration into the host community.

Students also sign a Bahasa Indonesia language pledge for the duration of the program.

Your homestay in Bali will be in the village of Kerambitan, and within a short distance from the program center, which allows most students will walk to and from classes.  

Other Accommodations

While on short excursionsyou will stay in small boarding houses/hotels or tourist camping facilities.
