India: National Identity and the Arts

Educational Excursions

Please note that in order to take advantage of dynamic learning opportunities, program excursions may occasionally vary.

Students experience the vibrant cultural environment of Delhi and other Indian states through the program’s many excursions.

Visits in and around Delhi include:

  • Historical and cultural sites
  • Museums and art galleries
  • Concerts and recitals
  • Dance and drama performances
Agra and Fatehpur Sikri
On the first weekend after orientation, students travel to Agra, home to the Taj Mahal and a former capital of the Mughal Dynasty. Students also visit Fatehpur Sikri — the “City of Victory” a World Heritage Site constructed by Emperor Akbar in the sixteenth century. This excursion inaugurates the program’s series of site lectures.

The Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya.

Varanasi, Bodhgaya, Kolkata, and Orissa
The program’s major excursion takes students to Lucknow, Varanasi, Bodhgaya, Kolkata, and Orissa. These places represent a diversity of Indian historical sites:

  • Varanasi is often referred to as the oldest city in the world; it is the most sacred city in Hinduism.
  • It was at Bodhgaya that Siddhartha Gautama found Awakening to become the Buddha.
  • Kolkata was the capital of British India and it boasts a rich architectural heritage from that period.
  • Bhubaneshwar and Puri are ancient cities in Orissa: they are filled with the magnificent remains of Hindu architecture. Students have an opportunity to see Odissi dance, one of India’s great classical dance traditions and visit Raghurajpur, a village still known for its traditional pilgrimage paintings.
