SIT Study Abroad is committed to the health and safety of all our program participants. Through our years of experience, we have found that preparation, prevention, and communication are key to keeping students healthy and safe.
Prior to departure, all students must submit a medical form, which will be reviewed by our health team. All questions must be answered, and materials must be submitted on time.
We strongly encourage all students to fully disclose their medical history so that we can prepare them properly for their experience, make arrangements for any special accommodations for students if necessary, and in some cases assess whether there may be any medical reasons that a student should consider another program.
This information will be kept confidential and will be provided to our academic directors in-country as necessary, so that our program staff will know students' medical history in case of an emergency. A member of our staff may contact students to discuss program realities and to clarify expectations for our program staff and for the student.
Please note that failure to disclose complete and accurate information on the medical form can result in dismissal from the program.
SIT Study Abroad automatically purchases accident, health, and repatriation insurance for all participants. Students are encouraged to maintain their ongoing coverage in the US, if possible. Check with your health insurance company or home school for details.
The SIT Study Abroad program fee includes health insurance designed to cover the cost of medical care necessitated by sickness or accidents that occur during the official program period. In the unlikely event of a medical emergency, the highest quality medical care will be arranged, subject to the terms of the coverage. If necessary, the coverage facilitates medical evacuation of students from the country.
For details about insurance coverage for our US students, read the Description of Coverage.
For details about insurance coverage for our Switzerland programs, read the Description of Coverage.
For details about insurance coverage for our non-US students, read the Description of Coverage.
SIT’s insurance coverage includes access to a 24-hour emergency assistance network. This multilingual service can help locate medical treatment and coordinate with doctors and hospitals, while confirming health insurance coverage and arranging settlement of bills. It can also help on legal matters, emergency medical evacuation, replacement of stolen passports or tickets, and other general assistance.
All students should print the insurance ID Card and carry a copy with them at all times. Other copies should be stored in a safe place, and SIT Study Abroad recommends leaving a copy with someone at home.
